1. Bengal CM's March to Jadavpur University with Naga Sadhus
A front-page report in Indian Express says Chief Minister of Bengal Amit Chaudhuri marched to Jadavpur University on September 9 to challenge students smoking ganja and indulging in free speech. The article examines the historical and philosophical lineage of Naga sadhus and saffron-clad ascetics, connecting them to gymnosophists encountered by Pyrrho during Alexander's incursion into India.
Why it matters: The Chief Minister of Bengal personally led a contingent of Naga sadhus to Jadavpur University on September 9, directly confronting student behaviour and a newspaper's use of the term saffron hooliganism. This is not a routine campus visit — it is a political and cultural statement that bridges centuries of ascetic philosophy with contemporary campus politics.
Key detail: The march included Naga sadhus and was framed as a response to students smoking ganja and engaging in unchecked free speech, while also protesting the label saffron hooliganism applied by a newspaper. The historical lineage connects these sadhus to gymnosophists encountered by Pyrrho during Alexander's incursion into India and to the ancient tradition of suspending judgement.
