1 Key US Space Force Story for Indian Professionals
According to Press Monitor's media monitoring of Indian publications, the United States has confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons in space, triggering a global debate on space weaponisation and treaty implications. This press review delivers media intelligence and print media monitoring on the news on space weapons from eight Indian outlets.
1. US Space Force Confirms Orbital Weapons Deployment
The United States Space Force has officially confirmed on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink disclosed these capabilities at the Air and Space Cyber Conference in Maryland, stating the systems can be employed for both offensive and defensive purposes.
Why it matters: This is the first time the US has publicly acknowledged deploying active weapons in orbit, marking a pivotal shift in space policy. The admission has drawn sharp criticism from both Russia and China, with the Kremlin calling for space to remain free of weapons and Beijing warning against the weaponisation of outer space.
Key detail: The admission highlights significant legal ambiguities surrounding space weaponisation, as existing international treaties like the 1967 Outer Space Treaty do not explicitly ban conventional orbital armaments.

Next step: Monitor how Russia and China respond diplomatically and whether this triggers new space defence treaties or escalates the space arms race.
