11. Investors Pressure Gaming Companies on Revenue and Discipline

Gaming firms face pressure for predictable revenue and operational discipline. Ubisoft's restructuring and EA's privatization are key examples.

20. Jewellers Roll Out Cash-for-Gold Schemes Ahead of Festive Season

"We are not seeing significant traction here, but that option is available for custom- ers to bring their own gold and exchange that for cash," Arun Narayan, chief executive of jewellery division, said during an analyst call on7 August. The trend is, however, picking up as jewellers look to tap the large pool of gold held by households, analysts said. "The trend is definitely increasing," said Rahul Guha, senior director at Crisil Ratings, adding that cash-for-gold was initially a small market dominated by some players, particularly small regional ones. The expansion by large retailers is likely to be accompanied by tighter checks on the purity of gold being purchased, Guha said. "Cash for gold definitely will gradually increase over the medium term." The push comes at a crucial time, with the festive and wedding season approaching after a challenging first quarter. Gold prices have risen sharply this year, with 24-carat gold at %l,6O,48O perlO gm on 2l August, compared with around %l,35,OOO on I January, according to India Bullion and Jewellers Association data. The spike has made buyers cautious, particularly on discretionary jewellery purchases. Despite the price rise, industry participants expect gold demand to rise as the festive and wedding season gets underway. Analysts at Jefferies said weddings contribute to 6O% of gold purchases in India. "We remain cautiously optimistic about the demand environment during the upcoming festive and wedding season," Amit Modak, CEO of Reva Diamonds by PNGS, told Mint. The third quarter is traditionally the strongest for jewellery sales. "The moment the next (third) quarter begins, it will be a bumpersale," said Sanjay Banka, CFO, Senco Gold. Banka said volatility in prices could itself prompt some buying, particularly when prices rise rapidly. "Those who are on the fence, they think prices will go down. The moment they see prices going up, they’re going to start buying," he said. Still, higher prices are likely to keep a lid on volumes. "Q3 onwards, we do expect volumes to pick up to a certain extent, as compared to what we’ve seen in the first quarter, but not too much because the prices are already high," Guha said. The tough environment has shown on profitability. Kalyan’s Ebitda fell l4% sequentially in April-June, while its Ebitda margin shrank by lOO bps year-on-year and sequentially to 6%. For an extended version of this story, go to livemint.com Jewellers like Kalyan and Senco Gold are expanding cash-for-gold programs amid rising gold prices and cautious demand.
