1. FSSAI Suspends Marche Retail License Over Compliance Failures

A front-page report in Business Standard says FSSAI suspended retail license of Marche Retail (Le Marche Retail) after inspection revealed serious food safety violations. The agency issued prohibition order against SDP Industries for adulterated ghee products and manufacturing non-compliant variants. Suspension of Marche Retail, effective immediately, lasts 30 days while SDP Industries faces permanent sale ban on prohibited ghee products.

Why it matters: This front-page story across multiple papers underscores the heightened scrutiny on food safety in retail.

Key detail: FSSAI suspended Marche Retail's license for 30 days and permanently banned SDP Industries from selling ghee variants due to adulteration.

Next step: Retailers should review their compliance protocols to avoid similar enforcement actions.

2. Mango Splits Sales 50:50 Online-Offline via Myntra Quick Commerce

“A front-page report in Mint says” Mango’s India business is now split roughly 50:50 between online and offline, with deliveries from stores through fashion e-commerce platform Myntra’s quick-commerce service helping drive repeat purchases. About half of Mango’s India sales now come through fashion ecommerce platform Myn-tra, its exclusive master franchise partner, and the other half through brick-and-mortar stores, Daniel Lopez Garcia, chief commercial officer and board member, Mango, and Venu Nair, chief of strategic partnerships and omnichannel for Myntra, told Mint. Atthe end of 2O24, Myntra launched M-Now quick-com-merce service, where buyers order products that are collected from nearby stores and delivered. About half of Mango's India sales come through Myntra and the other half through stores, says Daniel Lopez Garcia, COO. Garcia said the model is more developed in India than in Europe, where quick commerce remains concentrated only in larger metropolitan markets. "The beauty of what Myntra has built is that this is not only targeting the big metropolis in India, but it’s targeting the whole country. also connecting the stock in the stores for the advantage of the consumer," he said. Mango is also expanding larger stores that bring multiple categories. Last week, Mango expanded its store at Ambience Mall in Gurugram, turning the earlier womenswear-only outlet into a larger store housing Mango Woman and Mango Man. It will do the same in another outlet in Delhi.

Why it matters: Mango's India strategy is a blueprint for global brands leveraging local quick-commerce platforms.

Key detail: Half of Mango's India sales come through Myntra, with M-Now quick commerce delivering from stores to customers nationwide.

Next step: Consumer goods brands should evaluate partnerships with quick-commerce platforms to capture hybrid demand.

3. Jewellers Roll Out Cash-for-Gold Schemes Ahead of Festive Season

"We are not seeing significant traction here, but that option is available for custom- ers to bring their own gold and exchange that for cash," Arun Narayan, chief executive of jewellery division, said during an analyst call on7 August. The trend is, however, picking up as jewellers look to tap the large pool of gold held by households, analysts said. "The trend is definitely increasing," said Rahul Guha, senior director at Crisil Ratings, adding that cash-for-gold was initially a small market dominated by some players, particularly small regional ones. The expansion by large retailers is likely to be accompanied by tighter checks on the purity of gold being purchased, Guha said. "Cash for gold definitely will gradually increase over the medium term." The push comes at a crucial time, with the festive and wedding season approaching after a challenging first quarter. Gold prices have risen sharply this year, with 24-carat gold at %l,6O,48O perlO gm on 2l August, compared with around %l,35,OOO on I January, according to India Bullion and Jewellers Association data. The spike has made buyers cautious, particularly on discretionary jewellery purchases. Despite the price rise, industry participants expect gold demand to rise as the festive and wedding season gets underway. Analysts at Jefferies said weddings contribute to 6O% of gold purchases in India. "We remain cautiously optimistic about the demand environment during the upcoming festive and wedding season," Amit Modak, CEO of Reva Diamonds by PNGS, told Mint. The third quarter is traditionally the strongest for jewellery sales. "The moment the next (third) quarter begins, it will be a bumpersale," said Sanjay Banka, CFO, Senco Gold. Banka said volatility in prices could itself prompt some buying, particularly when prices rise rapidly. "Those who are on the fence, they think prices will go down. The moment they see prices going up, they’re going to start buying," he said. Still, higher prices are likely to keep a lid on volumes. "Q3 onwards, we do expect volumes to pick up to a certain extent, as compared to what we’ve seen in the first quarter, but not too much because the prices are already high," Guha said. The tough environment has shown on profitability. Kalyan’s Ebitda fell l4% sequentially in April-June, while its Ebitda margin shrank by lOO bps year-on-year and sequentially to 6%. For an extended version of this story, go to livemint.com

Why it matters: With gold prices up 19% in 2026, retailers like Kalyan and Titan are using cash-for-gold to boost volumes and acquire raw material.

Key detail: Crisil rates the trend as increasing, with festive and wedding season expected to drive demand despite price volatility.

Next step: Jewellery retailers can leverage this model to unlock consumer gold holdings and manage inventory costs.
