5 Essential Mining Stories for Industry Executives
India's mining sector is witnessing significant shifts from policy changes to commodity booms. According to Press Monitor's tracking of Indian publications, here are the top 5 stories shaping the industry today. This media monitoring roundup covers the most critical developments.
1. Industrial Output Growth Slows to 6.7% in July
“Selon Asian Age, India’s industrial output growth slowed to 6.7 per cent in July from 8.8 per cent in June, mainly due to a contraction in mining, according to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Friday. The June growth rate was revised upwards from the earlier provisional estimate of 7.3 per cent. July's data is the fourth monthly Index of Industrial Production (IP) release under the new serie. Mining and quarrying contracted O.9 per cent in July, against lO.7 per cent growth a year earlier. Manufacturing grew 7.3 per cent, electricity and gas supply 8.7 per cent, and water supply, sewerage and waste management 7.4 per cent. In manufacturing, l9 of the 23 industry groups recorded year-on-year growth. Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers grew 22.2 per cent, electrical equipment 28.3 per cent, and machinery and equipment l2.l per cent. Auto components, spares and accessories, passenger cars and commercial vehicles were among the major contributors to growth in motor vehicles. Electrical apparatus for switching or protecting electrical circuits, UPS and solid-state drives, and end-face connectors for optical fibres and cables contributed to growth in electrical equipment, the NSO said. Under the use-based classification, capital goods grew l6.l per cent, intermediate goods lO per cent, consumer durables lO.5 per cent, infrastructure and construction goods 6.9 per cent and primary goods 4.l per cent. Consumer non-durables contracted l per cent in y. The data showed that the strongest growth came from capital goods, while consumer non-durables remained the only use-based category to record a contraction during the month. The July figures indicate that the overall slowdown in industrial output was driven largely by the mining contraction, while manufacturing and electricity generation continued to record growth.
Why it matters: A contraction in mining output pulled down overall industrial growth, signaling structural challenges in the sector.
Key detail: Mining and quarrying contracted 0.9% year-on-year, while manufacturing grew 7.3%.
