2. Argentina Clinches Women's Hockey World Cup

"Selon Hindustan Times, Argentina were crowned women’s hockey World Cup champions for the third time on Saturday after a sensational comeback to beat holders and co-hosts Netherlands 3-1 in the penalty shootout after the teams ended 1-1 at the final hooter of a high-voltage game. Nine-time champions Netherlands, with the home crowd behind them in Amstelveen, went ahead a minute before halftime after Yibbi Jansen, the world’s leading drag-flicker, converted a penalty corner. Argentina, brilliant in the midfield and defence in a highpaced final where they stopped many Dutch attacks, were eventually rewarded for their resilience and not dropping their energy levels. Skipper Maria Granatto, their best player drove into the scoring circle, earned a penalty corner and then swept home the rebound in the 54th minute. With the next six minutes not producing a winner, the final went into the shootout. The Dutch had not lost a World Cup game since losing to Argentina in the 2010 final, having won the 2014, 2018 and 2022 titles. Argentina, the 2002 and 2010 champions, had also lost to the Dutch in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics final. Argentina goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino emerged the shootout saviour, preventing three of Netherlands’ four attempts. Only Marijn Veen succeeded for the Dutch, while Victoria Granatto and Brisa Bruggeser kept Argentina 2-1 up. A third attempt was ruled out on review as it came off the back stick, but another stop by Cosentino later, Sofia Cairo converted to give Argentina an unassailable 3-1 lead as the players erupted into celebrations."
